What is Tezos Domains?
Tezos Domains is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system using the Tezos blockchain.
What is Tezos Domains used for?
Tezos Domains has a couple of use cases.
- Readable Names / Shortened Wallet Addresses
- Publishing Websites
- DNS bridging
- Web3 Name
Readable Names
Tezos Domains allows you to associate domain names like alice.tez with Tezos-based addresses such as tz1PnpYYdcgoVq1RYgj6qSdbzwSJRXXcfU3F
This is comparable to how DNS works on the normal world-wide web, swapping out an IP for a readable domain name (such as tezos.com) IPs are used every time we use the internet but its is masked by DNS to make the experience more user friendly and much more usable.
Having a Tezos Domain whilst using the Tezos Blockchain makes sending and receiving Tezos and NFTs much more secure and usable rather than copying and pasting long wallet addresses. For Example its easier and more secure knowing you are sending Tezos to alice.tez than the address of tz1PnpYYdcgoVq1RYgj6qSdbzwSJRXXcfU3F
Publishing Websites
You can publish a website using a Tezos Domain, however this is an experimental service.
Tezos Domains lets you host a website using the Interplanetary File System. If you own a Tezos domain like alice.tez, you can easily point it to IPFS content, and it will be available to the public under https://alice.tez.page. You can use a pinning service like Pinata to pin your content on IPFS for free.
You can learn more about how to do this here: Publishing a Website
Web3 Name
You are able to use your unique Tezos identity across most of Tezos Based DApps and emailing service Mailchain.
The limits with your Tezos Domain isn’t subject just to Tezos itself, weather you want to use it as a Online Identity on Social Media to connect with fellow Tezos users, or send a few emails using Mailchain’s integration with Tezos.
You can find more about how to use a Tezos Domain on Mailchain here: Mailchain Learn
DNS Bridging
If you own a DNS domain, the DNS bridge grants you a claimable Tezos Domain of the same name. .xyz is only supported at the moment, with more to possibly follow in the future.
